Many people have opinions on what texts should be considered good literature. One text that should be considered good literatureis the novel Of Mice And Men, because of the readers vizualization of Georges inner conflict.
Readers and writers wonder what good literature is. In Steinbeck's speech he states that good literature consists of the human heart in conflict with itself and this seemed like the only subject worth writing about. The resolution of fear is a large part of a writers reason or reasons for being. The present universal fear inspires types of good writing from knowledge and munipulation from dangerous factors in the physical world. Many people such as myself think that good literature is writing that has various subjects from knowledge or experiences to inspire it. Good literature consists of parts of the human heart in conflict with itself and universal fear that is present because many subjects can be grasped from these ideas or conflicts.
One situation in the novel is George's inner conflict with himself. George told Lennie that his life would be so much better without having to take care of and look after him. When Lennie wanted ketchup with his beans George told him that they did not have any. Although Lennie liked ketchup with his beans he told George he did not want any of it and he would give it all to George. George told him that he would have a swell time without him. Lennie said " you want I should go away and leave you alone", " I could live in a cave in those hills." George was wanting Lennie to be less of a hassle and to be smarter than he was. Lennie was the only thing keeping Georege from having his own place and maybe even a woman. George was being drug down by Lennie he loved him, but just wanted to do his own thing without him.
Another situation in the novel is the physical fear Lennie had towards Curley. Curley got mad at Lennie whene he was smiling at the rememberence of the memory or having rabbits. Curley had gone to look for his wife and thought Slim might have been with her of seen her in the barn. Slim and Curley were yelling when they came back in the bunk house and Curley asked Lennie what the hell he was laughing at. He started punching Lennie, but Lennie would not hit him back. George told Lennie to get him so he grabbed Curley's hand and cruched it. Lennie was just scared when Curley started hit him, but when he grabbed Curley's hand he would not let go. George told Lennie that it was ok and Curley deserved it.
The situations stated from the novel and info fromm the speech show how Of Mice And Men could be considered good literature. The novel also consists of many situations Steinbeck said would influence good literature.
